EARLY YEARS |

"I was born on January 29, 1915, in Grandview, Indiana, a very small town on the banks of the Ohio River. All I remember of Grandview are the two pigs we raised in our backyard, one dull white, and the other rusty red. When I was three, my family moved to Indianapolis. This was during World War I.Our first home in Indianapolis was just a block from the railroad and I can remember the long lines of snow-covered army tanks rumbling by on flatcars during that first winter. Looking back on those early days in Indianapolis, I realize that it was a good place for a boy to spend his childhood. Until I was twelve we lived near the edge of the city, a half-hour hike from the open countryside, with its small creeks winding through rolling hills. On Saturdays and all during the summer my brothers and I along with the neighborhood boys explored this region." |
