EARLY ILLUSTRATION WORK

"Rhymes of the Ozark Hills" by Harry Lyons Riggle was published in 1944.With brush and India ink Bill Peet made eight illustrations, including the cover, for this little book of poetry.

In 1948, Walt Disney studios published "So Dear to my Heart" as A Golden Story book to accompany their live action film by the same name. Bill Peet illustrated this version of the story by Sterling North. For some reason the cover illustration was done by someone else. This is the story of a boy who dreams of winning first prize at the county fair for his lamb. The story begins with the express train stopping to allow a champion race horse to stretch its legs. Bill Peet's story of the The Whingdingdilly also begins with the arrival of a champion horse, but there the similarity ends.

In 1957 Bill Peet wrote and illustrated a series of articles on the history of trains for Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse Club Magazine titled "Road Engines and Rails". Below is a double page spread from one issue. Trains were important elements in many of his own books.
